I ran the same 104-word block of AI filler through six free AI humanizers in July 2026. Two of them stopped me at a create-an-account wall before I could see a single word of output. The rest showed a result, then locked the part that makes it trustworthy: the score, the strong model, the word count. One just gave me the whole thing.
That is the gap this article is about. "Free" on a humanizer's homepage almost never means the whole tool is free. It usually means you get a taste, then the useful part sits behind a signup or a paywall. So I tested where each wall actually is, with screenshots of every result.
How I tested
Same input for all six, free tier only, no account created, all on the same afternoon. The input was one deliberately robotic paragraph, stuffed with the usual tells, so any real humanizer would have plenty to fix:

For each tool I noted four things: the free word limit, whether it forced a signup, what sat behind the paywall, and whether the free output was actually usable. I judged nothing on marketing copy, only on what the screen showed.
The results at a glance

Two of the six walled the result behind a signup before showing anything. Three more handed over a result but locked the useful part: the score, the strong model, the word count. Only one left everything open. Here is each one.
QuillBot: the result is free, the proof is not
QuillBot did the easy part free. It rewrote the paragraph and let me read and copy the whole thing with no account. The problem is what it did to the text: this is a paraphraser wearing a humanizer label. It swapped words ("With rapid changing digital scenario," "the deployment of") but left the structure intact, and it kept "Moreover," one of the most obvious AI tells there is, sitting right in the middle of the output.
The real gate is subtler. The score that tells you whether the output beats a detector shows "--%" behind a crown, and the tone options are locked too. You can have the rewrite, but not the one number that tells you if the rewrite worked.
Undetectable.ai: the free model comes with a warning
This was the most honest paywall in the test, because the tool tells on itself. The free "Basic" model ran without an account, but the result carried a red warning right under the text: "AI detectors might still flag your text with the Basic Public Model." In other words, the free output may not do the one job you came for.
The two models that supposedly work, Stealth and Undetectable, sit padlocked behind "Sign up for FREE to unlock the Undetectable Humanizer Models." So the free tier is a demo the company itself labels as unreliable, and the fix is an account. Credit for the honesty, but that is a paywall with a warning label, not a free humanizer.
WriteHuman: paste your text, then "create a free account to continue"
WriteHuman let me paste the paragraph and set it up, then put a hard wall between me and the result: a "Create a free account to continue" modal, with Google, Apple, or email signup. No account, no output. The counter behind the wall shows the free ceiling too, 250 words, and the stronger "Enhanced" model wears a padlock.
This is the cleanest example of the trick in the whole test. The homepage says free; the tool says "all tools for free" in the same breath as demanding an email. Free, once you hand over a signup and agree to marketing emails, is a different product than free.
HIX Bypass: the output is behind a "sign in" screen
HIX Bypass makes a loud promise up top: "Bypass AI Every Time With 100% Undetectable Content," "99.5% Success Rate." Then it took my paragraph and, instead of showing a result, threw up "Try premium AI humanizer now" with Sign in with Google and Sign in with Facebook. The output box behind it stayed blank.
So the free experience is: paste your text, hand over a social login, and only then find out what the tool does. For a site advertising a free bypass, the actual free action is signing up. That is a paywall at the front door.
Humanize AI: "unlimited words" that caps at 300
The browser tab literally reads "Unlimited Words." The editor caps the free run at 300 words and 1,800 characters, and a banner across the top sells "Unlimited Words/Month for Just $6." So "unlimited" is the paid plan, and free is a 300-word Basic model with the difference view, synonyms, rephrasing, and keyword lock all padlocked, as the screenshot shows.
The free output was readable but sloppy, with filler ("kinda forcing companies to use artificial intelligence") and stray spaces before commas. Usable in a pinch, up to 300 words, once you ignore the homepage promise.
TextToHuman: the one that did not put up a wall
Full disclosure: this is our tool, so weigh the rest of the test more than this section. That said, the screenshot is the screenshot. It humanized the paragraph, showed the entire result, and scored it in one screen, with no account, a 1,500-word limit per run, and no "better model" greyed out behind a plan. Both writing modes and the autopilot option were usable free.
It is not magic. The rewrite reshuffled sentence structure rather than swapping a few words, which is the part that actually matters for reading human, but the prose still needs a light edit, and no humanizer can promise a detector score forever. What it did not do was the thing the other five did: make me sign up, hit a cap, or hide the result. What "free" should actually mean
The pattern across five of these six tools is the same trick: give you a result, then charge for the part that makes the result trustworthy, the score, the strong model, the word count, the second try. It is free the way a sample tray is free.
Before you trust any humanizer, run the test I ran. Paste one obviously-AI paragraph, and watch for the wall: does it cap your words, grey out the good model, hide the score, or ask you to sign up before you can copy? If it does, that is the paywall, just wearing a nicer word. And whatever you use, check the output yourself with a free AI detector before you rely on it, because a "99% Human" badge from the same company selling the rewrite is not neutral.
